Winning return for Doyle

LIZ DOYLE, who has just returned after being sidelined for six weeks due to injury, took the Open Lightweight Race (confined to lady riders) at the West Carbery Hunt Point-to-Point at Skibbereen on Saturday on her own Sober Performance (evens to 4-6).

Doyle sent the nine-year-old, seeking his seventh success, to the front early on and controlled the race until the third last where she was strongly challenged by Pretty Young Thing (4-1 to 5-1).

There was little between the pair until coming to the last where Sober Performance got the better of the duel, going on to win by a length and a half from Native Daisy (3-1), which came late in the hands of Jennifer Lee to take second place just ahead of Pretty Young Thing.

“This is my second win of the season and I will probably go to Liscarroll with him next Sunday," commented Doyle.

The training honours of the afternoon went to Sean Aherne of Tallow who recorded a double. He sent out Moslob (3-1) to take the opening 5 & 6-Y-O Geldings Maiden and followed up with Count Rossini in the Winners of Two.

Six faced the starter in the opening 5 & 6-Y-O Geldings Maiden with Rog the favourite (2-1 to 6-4). However it was Moslob and A Pound Down (5-2) who dominated.

A Pound Down took it up coming to the second last, but his rider, Derek O’Connor, lost his irons jumping the fence and Tom Feeney came with a renewed effort on Moslob to score by two lengths. It was Feeney’s first winner of the season and his second in all.

"He is a half brother to The Wipper" said the winning trainer.

Count Rossini, owned by Nicky O’Neill of Tallow, Co. Waterford, was the busisness in the ring (2-1 to 7-4 ) in the Winners of Two.

Eoin Gallagher took the six-year-old to the front from flag fall and set a good pace. Fiery Quest (5-1), who was never out of the first three, moved up to challenge at fourth from home but the favourite was always holding Colman Sweeney’s mount and had two lengths to spare at the line.

"He will continue point-to- pointing and hunter chasing this year," said his trainer.

Seventeen-year-old John Flavin from Tramore recorded his first success on the point-to -point field when he went one better than his second on Camden Lake at the Horse and Jockey the previous Sunday in the 5-Y-0 and upwards mares maiden.

The winner hit front with more than two circuits to race and was left clear after the second last following the departure of 7-2 favourite Barnhely Baroness. In the end Camden Lake had twenty lengths to spare over Executive Rosann (3-1 to 4-1)

A major gamble on Lordell (5-2 to 5-4) came unstuck in the 7-Y-O & Upwards Geldings Maiden when he fell on the first circuit.

Nuclear Style (4-1 to 6-1) went on to take the honours with a facile ten lengths win in the hands of Jennifer Lee. The winner took over from Douglas Hideaway (5-1 to 6-1) going out for the final time and gradually pulled away.
