Judicial Castlelu scores and is a leading fancy for derby glory

PAT DALY of Ballinhassig, Co. Cork will have one of the leading fancies for the Boyle Bookmakers Derby at Clonmel in February following the success of his impressive puppy Judicial Castlelu in the final of the Patsy Byrne Corn na Féile Derby at Abbeyfeale.

The son of Hilltown, who entered the notebook when qualifying at Cashel, was 1-3 favourite yesterday morning to take the 3,500 euro prize.

After disposing of Regional qualifier Early Force by three lengths in a two turn course, he went on to meet Miltown Malbay qualifier Initial Try in the final. The latter had beaten Lucan Jet by a length when coming from behind, in his semi-final.

In the final Judicial Castlelu, trained by Michael O’Donovan, was smartly away and led all the way for a length and a half success.

There was no final to the Patsy Byrne Corn na Feile Oaks after the litter sisters, Cooga Bing, who won her trial stake at Kilmallock, and Cooga Wonder, who booked her ticket at Thurles, made it to the final.

Both bitches are owned by the McLoughlins of Doon, Co. Limerick with Bing running for son Shane and Wonder for son Thomas.

The first semi-final was an unsatisfactory affair as Cooga Bing led nearly all the way in a course with no no turn. Waiting To Work appeared to nose in front heading in the closing stages, but the judge who pulled in favour of the red collar.

In the second semi-final Cooga Wonder created a bit of an upset when coming from behind to beat the even money overnight favourite, Annual Flight, by two lengths.

The Derby Trial Stake was won in good style by the Dan Brassil trained Ballinattin, who defeated the overnight favourite, Sandy Bottom.

The runner-up was not disgraced as he got a tough course in the semi-final against Kyle Donie.

In the decider Ballinattin was best away from slips to be up a length and a half against Sandy Bottom.

Dan Brassil was again on the ball in the Oaks Trial Stake final when he handled Ashmore Lady, owned by Gary Anderson and Steven Boyle from Bessbrook, to take the honours.

The winner had put out the overnight favourite Quarrymount Vera in the second round and in the final came up against Tiny Shrek. The Northern owned bitch was very smartly away to have five lengths in hand over Tiny Shrek for the only turn in the final.
