Spencer: “Some day I hope I can get it right on Pius”
Spencer appeared to have every chance inside the final furlong aboard the Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old, who then jinked left behind Singletary and lost by half a length.
The quirky son of Danzig had lost the French 2000 Guineas in May when he veered sharply right into the rails close home with the race at his mercy.
Spencer, back in action at Leopardstown this afternoon, told At The Races: “I thought when I got the gap down the inside turning for home last night that I would definitely win. Even when I got to the furlong pole, I thought I would.
“He edged a tad left, but that is usual for him. The straight was only a furlong and a half long so it leaves no room for error. He ran his heart out and it was the best run of his life.
“He usually goes right, but last night, just before the furlong pole, where the mile and one track joins, there is no rail for about a hundred yards, and he copped a look at it I would say.
“The reason he does it is because he finds it so easy, he travels so well. Some day hopefully I can get it right on him and produce him right on the line.
“He is a challenge to ride, but we gave it our best shot last night and Aidan had him in peak form.”
