Kinane continues in fine form

MICK KINANE continues in excellent form, and the champion jockey and current championship leader, brought his score for the season to 47 when riding a double on the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair Carpanetto and Tumblebrutus at Naas last night.

Kinane continues in fine form

Both colts started evens favourite for their respective races and Carpanetto, who was making a belated seasonal debut, comfortably landed the one mile Darley Stallions Race, winning by two and a half lengths from Jade Quest.

Kinane brought the winner up the centre of the course for the best of the ground and hit the front almost two furlongs out after Mukammal, who faded to finish seven lengths adrift in third, had made the running.

Speaking from Ballydoyle, O’Brien said: “Carpanetto had a few little problems early in the year and we had to give him plenty of time. He won his maiden well last season and I’d imagine we’ll probably step him up to listed class now, maybe over a mile and a quarter.”

Tumblebrutus is a full brother to Giant’s Causeway who began his career in the same six-furlong two-year-old maiden in 1999. Last night’s winner has a long way to go if he is to even approach Giant’s Causeway’s achievements, but he went about his business in good style and ran on well to beat the highly-regarded newcomer Ulfah, by two and a half lengths.

It was the winner’s third start and O’Brien said: “He’s a big horse who carried a lot of condition first time out. He has progressed well from race to race and we’ll look for a Group race for him next time. He is a possible for the Futurity Stakes.”

Pádraig Beggy, 17, made good use of an unexpected opportunity when riding his first winner on Red Venus for whom he was a late replacement in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.

Beggy from Dunboyne, Co. Meath, is apprenticed to Kevin Prendergast and he sent 10/1 shot Red Venus, trained by Séamus Fahey, clear inside the final furlong to win the one-mile event by four lengths.

Fahey said: “This mare was unlucky at Ballinrobe on Monday. She’ll probably go to Galway next week if she isn’t balloted out.”
