McCoy celebrates fastest century with treble

TONY MCCOY created yet another piece of history yesterday when notching up the fastest century of winners and scoring a near 18-1 treble at Newton Abbot.

McCoy celebrates fastest century with treble

McCoy reached 100 winners on September 17 last year but he did not have the best of starts to the day as he took a fall from Ela d‘Argent in the first race but he bounced back to take the next on the Martin Pipe-trained Tiger Grass (4-6 favourite).

He then partnered Toi Express (2-5 favourite) to an easy five-length victory for Philip Hobbs which chalked up the 100th winner and helped him beat his own record by 13 days.

The rider, who only last week beat Richard Dunwoody‘s all-time winners record of 1699, not content with just a new record and a double, then went on to complete his three-timer on 7-1 shot Anatar from the Pipe stable in the Bailey‘s Irish Cream Handicap Hurdle.

After setting the record McCoy joked: “I've been getting some stick from valet Shane Clark and a few of the other lads who keep telling me I should have done it sooner if I hadn't kept getting beaten on so many horses, so next year I'll do it by mid-August!

“Seriously, it's great to get there ahead of last year as I never set out to do it and I don't ride any differently. I just try to win as many races as possible for all the owners and trainers who support me and I'd like to thank them all as a result.”

McCoy’s next target it to better last season's total of 289 winners and put 300 on the board over the coming months.
