Double delight for Condon at Cappoquin

THERE was double delight for John Condon at the Cappoquin, Clogheen & District coursing meeting yesterday.

The Curraghglass, Co.Cork handler won the Oaks Trial Stake with his wife’s Why Tanyardjane and also trained Sonas Chieftain to take the featured Fran Mangan All-Aged Cup for Ballymacoda, Co. Cork joint owners Con Riordan and Kevin Downing.

In his opening course Sonas Chieftain was up four lengths for the only turn against Macroney House and then led all the way for a length success over Top Inquiry, taking the only two scores in the course.

In the semi-final he led Public Bean Tithe all the way to the escape for a four lengths success.

At the top of the draw No Favours Here was slowly away against Mountfinn Boy in the opening round, but came through to take the turn by three lengths. He then came up against Suncrest Alex, leading two lengths for the turn, they having three further scores before the hare went home.

In the semi-final, in a short slip, he had to give best by a length to Brother Daly, jointly owned by Master Richard Purcell and Miss Sinead Maher from Mullinahone, Co. Tipperary, after being slowly away.

In the final, Brother Daly looked like taking the 1,000 prize when he led from slips but Sonas Chieftain came storming through to get up by a length and a half, and then got in for another score before the finish.

In the Oaks Trial Stake, Why Tanyardjane was very impressive in winning her quarter-final and semi-final . She maintained her good form in the final against Dixie Queen.

Owned by Michael F. Hubbert (Baltimore) and trained by Michael O’Keeffe and Judy Mehigan from Midleton, Co. Cork, Dixie Queen had no answer to Why Tanyardjane’s early pace and had to give best by four lengths at the turn.

The Derby Trial Stake was won in good style by Atlantic Gold, jointly owned by Eamonn A Kiely from Cappoquin and Michael Corcoran from Galway and trained by Johnny McCarthy and Aine Roche McCarthy in Banteer.

In the final against Dermot O’Sullivan’s (Cork) Vacume Legend Atlantic Gold took control from slips held his advantage to take the vital turn by a length to book his passage to Clonmel.
