Puzzle set for Meld outing

Martin Kelly

The July 24 event would be the first start in over 20 months for the seven-year-old who has been absent since landing the Group One Handicap at Flemington in November 2002.

The son of Theatrical missed the whole of last year due to an injury picked up while training in Dubai but is a possible for the forthcoming 10-furlong contest.

“It looks pretty certain that the Meld will be a start-off point,” Weld told www.Irish-Racing.com. “He is well but it is only July and there is no point yet talking about future plans beyond that.”

Weld’s other star stayer Vinnie Roe missed out on last month’s Curragh Cup after it was decided he would have to carry too much weight and he also swerved the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot due to the prevailing fast ground.

A date for his return to the racecourse has yet to be decided and Weld added: “Vinnie Roe is fine but we haven’t decided what we will do with him yet.”
