Ash burns off rivals to make top price at sales

LEFANTA ASH was the star turn at yesterday's Curraheen Park sales.

The black son of Judicial Post, owned by John Geoghegan of Cappoquin, was an impressive fourteen lengths winner of his pre-sales trial in 28.91. Following some lively bidding, he was eventually knocked down to Brough Park trainer Jim Fenwick for €8,500.

College Gourmet, the property of Frank Cullothy from Killarney, Co. Kerry, an easy winner of a race over the circuit last week, secured the next best price when local agent Michael A. Walsh went to €3,500 to get the brindle. He had won his pre-sales trial in 29.05 and will now go to race in Barcelona.

Not far behind was David and Michael Power’s (Butlerstown, Co. Waterford) Honey Top who went to English agent John Dainty for €3.400 after he had won his trial in 29.24.

Jim Fenwick, was again the top bidder for Mrs. Kathleen Cullinane’s (Cappoquin) Villiers Class when he secured the black for €3,300 after a 29.23 pre-sales trial.

Two other lots were sold for €3,000. Pat Muldoon from Watergrasshill, Co. Cork, laid out that amount to get John O’Connell’s (Cobh) Ballymore Chief, while Dave Smith from Kent went to the same sum to get King of Tunes, who will go open racing in England. The blue had won his pre-sales trial by four lengths in 28.92.
