Cian McPhillips will miss next month’s World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, having been forced to cut his indoor season short following a dental issue earlier this month.
The Longford athlete had intended to race at the event and shaped up as a medal contender after a hugely impressive opening to the season in Boston last month, coasting to victory over 600m, clocking 1:16.37.
He’d been due to race over 800m the following week at the Millrose Games in New York but withdrew on the eve of the race and had to undergo a procedure for a dental issue. He has since recovered from that but he has decided not to chase qualification for the World Indoors, with the deadline approaching on Sunday, March 8.
He will be absent from the nationals this weekend, with the path clear for Mark English to win his 10th national indoor title – the Donegal athlete in flying form so far this season, setting the Irish indoor 800m record of 1:44.23 in Ostrava.
Sarah Healy will also miss next month’s World Indoors, the Dubliner confirming on social media this week that she will not be competing indoors this year. Rhasidat Adeleke is also set to bypass the event in Poland. The Dubliner has raced once during the indoor season, setting a national indoor record of 36.30 for 300m in Arkansas a fortnight ago.
For them, the focus is now firmly on the outdoor season, where the Europeans in Birmingham in August and the inaugural World Ultimate Championship in Budapest September will be the two big events.
