Kate O’Connor is now within touching distance of history for Irish athletics after a huge performance in the javelin at the World Championships in Tokyo today, the 24-year-old moving up to second in the standings as she prepares for the concluding 800m.

Barring disaster in the final event, O’Connor looks set to win Ireland a silver medal which would be its first world outdoor medal in 12 years and its first ever global outdoor medal in the multi-events.
