Three Rock Rovers defeat Banbridge in AIG Irish Senior Cup
CLINICAL: Julian Dale yet again proved deadly from the top of the D with all four goals for Quins,
The AIG Irish Senior Cup second round took centre stage this weekend for both men and women.
On the men’s side the top two sides in EYHL 1, Three Rock Rovers and Banbridge, met at Grange Road. The crowd were treated to an end-to-end battle with the game level at 2-2 going into the final minutes.
Banbridge conceded a penalty stroke with seconds remaining and Irish international Luke Madeley made no mistake to give Three Rock a 3-2 win.
Munster’s interest in the competition continues as Harlequins had an impressive 4-2 win away to Glenanne.
Julian Dale yet again proved deadly from the top of the D with all four goals, bringing his tally for the season to an already incredible 36 goals. C of I battled hard against Monkstown but the EYHL 1 side came out 2-0 winners.
In the women’s competition, a single goal from Sarah Fitzgerald was enough for Catholic Institute to overcome Belfast Harlequins and make the quarter-final draw.
There was no such fortune for the other Munster sides involved. UCC equalised late through Nikki Barry at the Mardyke to send the game to a shootout against UCD.
However, the visitors came out on top to knock UCC out.
Harlequins women had a tough trip to face the current EYHL 1 leaders Loreto. An early lead through Maya Dullea proved to be a false dawn as Loreto proceeded to score 8 before Dullea grabbed a late consolation.
In the Irish Hockey Trophy, C of I women have made the final four after a hard-caught 2-1 win over Omagh.
Omagh took the lead in the fast-paced early quarters before Julie Coyne equalised from a corner. Sally Murray then grabbed the winner in the final quarter to put C of I through.
On the Munster Division 1 Cup semi-final Bandon have made it to the final after a shootout win over rivals Ashton. The game had ended 1-1 in normal time. They will play C of I in the final.
