Munster stars to shine at Masters Hockey World Cup in New Zealand
The Irish Over 50s team, captained by Cork Wanderers Blaithin Keating who will be taking part in the Masters Hockey World Cup in New Zealand.
Six women from Munster will be part of the Irish teams taking part in the Masters Hockey World Cup at New Zealand.
Susan McCourt from Bandon Hockey Club; Noreen Daly Gillis from Harlequins; Kathy Shaw and Blaithin Keating from Cork Wanderers; Jacqui Freyne from Tipperary Hockey Club, and Karen Long Eacrett from Limerick are part of the squad.
This marks the second World Cup cycle for these players as it provides a platform for athletes to continue pursuing their passion and competing at a high level of hockey.
Ms Keating will have the honour of captaining the Ireland Women's Over 50s team. Her leadership and experience will be invaluable as the team aims for success on the world stage.
The Over 50s team face a challenging draw with matches against Chile, Australia, England (the current holders), and Canada in their pool.
The Over 55s team will compete against the Netherlands, Australia, and Argentina.
Both teams are gearing up for tough competition, but their determination and skill set them up as strong contenders.
Games start on Thursday, November 7 with the Over 50s facing Chile in their first tie, before taking on Australia the following day.
They face England on Monday, November 11 and round off the group stages against Canada on the following Wednesday.
The Over 55s start on November 7 against Australia and face the Netherlands in their second tie the following day. They round off their group stages against Argentina on Tuesday, November 12.
Meanwhile in the men’s EYHL 1 Three Rock Rovers will put their perfect start to the season on the line again this weekend, this time against defending champions Banbridge.
Having bolstered their squad with the likes of Irish panellists Kevin O’Dea and Mark Collins, they will be hoping this extra depth can keep them challenging.
The other side with a perfect record, Lisnagarvey, face a tricky trip to Monkstown who themselves have had a mixed start to their season but still possess the firepower to defeat any team in the league.
In Munster, the first round of the men’s Peard Cup takes place at Garryduff between Church of Ireland and Bandon.
Both sides will have been disappointed not to make it to last year's St Stephen’s Day final and will be looking to make amends this season. C of I are the form side heading into this one and indeed edged a 2-1 win over them in the league a few weeks ago.
In the women’s EYHL 1 Loreto will be looking to continue winning ways at the summit of the table as they host Ards.
Catholic Institute, who currently sit second, travel to Pembroke Wanderers hoping to keep pace with the leaders. In the battle of the colleges, UCD host UCC in Belfield.

After a slow start to the season, UCC have now won six points in their last three games and will be keen to create a gap between themselves and UCD who currently sit bottom.
In women’s Munster Division 1, Harlequins will be strong favourites to continue their winning form as they host Crescent. Bandon and Waterford will be looking to keep pace as they face Ashton and Catholic Institute B respectively.
