Bubbles are an athlete’s best friend and the media’s nemesis. A journalist knows there’s precious little gold to be mined as soon as a sportsperson starts talking about bubbles. It’s a shelter against all that ‘outside noise’, a shield from the most thorny or softball of queries.

It’s a conversation killer.
