Twelve years have passed since Ireland’s last Olympic medal in athletics – Rob Heffernan’s race walk bronze in 2012 – but hopes are high that drought might be set to end after the Olympic Federation of Ireland announced its team for this year’s Games.

With 17 individuals, and two relay teams, there is every chance of Ireland claiming its first Olympic medal on the track since Sonia O’Sullivan’s silver at Sydney 2000. Today’s selections brings to 122 the total number of athletes officially announced on Team Ireland, surpassing the previous largest team (116).
