Michael Conlan chooses to go pro with Manny Pacquiao’s promoter

Michael Conlan has signed for the prestigious Top Rank boxing promotion as he officially joins the professional ranks, writes Stephen Barry.

The World Champion amateur and Olympic medallist is a top prospect for the pro game and the US-based Top Rank, and its renowned CEO Bob Arum, have secured Conlan’s signature.

Manny Pacquiao is the highest profile fighter with the company, with Timothy Bradley and Julio César Chávez Jr. also among their ranks.

Conlan, who joins his brother older Jamie as a pro boxer, announced the news on Twitter this evening.

His decision to leave the amateur ranks comes as no surprise after his furious reaction to a controversial judges' decision, which saw him knocked out of the Rio Olympics by a Russian fighter.

Earlier today, Conlan’s Olympic teammate Paddy Barnes announced that he’s also turning professional.

He has joined Matthew Macklin’s MGM Gym, based in Marbella.

Their decisions follow on from former European champion Ray Moylette's pro move, as the exodus of Irish amateur boxers continues.
