Taylor on course for fifth world title
Irish Olympic star Katie Taylor is now just one step away from her fifth World Championship title in a row after defeating China’s Junhua Yin in this morning’s semi-final.
The Bray native will now face Azerbaijan’s Yana Allekseevana the final of the AIBA Women’s World Championships in Jeju, South Korea.
Two of the three judges had Taylor ahead before her opponent’s corner threw in the towel at the start of the fourth round due to an elbow injury.
The Olympic gold medallist told the official International Boxing Association website www.aiba.org: "I am delighted to be in another final.
"I was surprised that the towel came in but it looked like she hurt her hand in the third round. The plan was just plenty of feints.
"Sometimes you have to be really patient against those kind of boxers. These kind of matches are just like a chess match. It is a game of patience most of the time.
"I am looking forward to the challenge tomorrow."
Taylor qualified for the semi-final without having to throw a punch after her quarter-final opponent, Sofya Ochigava of Russia, pulled out with an injury.
The final will take place tomorrow morning at 6am Irish time, and will be broadcast live on TG4.
