Defending champions Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova both crashed out on a day of shocks at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Sharapova was upset 6-3 4-6 7-5 by Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi while Nadal fell 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7/5) to Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov.
