Murphy in tight race for gold in sailing

Annalise Murphy is in for a tense medal race in the Women's Laser Radial class on Monday as she finished in seventh in the second race of the day at Weymouth.

Earlier, she got her medal drive back on track after a stunning display in the penultimate race of the series after she came in third and held the overall lead in the competition.

However, her closest rivals for the top spot, Marit Bouwmeester from the Netherlands, Lijia Xu from China and Belgium's Evi van Acker, claimed the top three places in the final race of the day to bring them back into contention.

Her closest rivals, Evi van Acker from Belgium and Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands finished eighth and sixth in the race respectively.

The result leaves Bouwmeester and Xu first overall on 33 points with Murphy and van Acker a single point behind in joint second.

The Rathfarnham girl now only needs to beat her main rivals in the medals race at 1pm on Monday to win the competition. There will be ten competitors in that final race.
