Baghdatis misses out on final
Marcos Baghdatis was unable to mark his 26th birthday with a place in the final of the UNICEF Open after losing to Ivan Dodig.
The second seed had earlier swept through his rain-delayed quarter-final against Denis Gremelmayr 6-1 6-0 in 47 minutes, before he ran out of steam against Dodig to fall 7-6 6-1.
Dodig, who was the only one in the last four to have completed his quarter-final before today, will face unseeded Dmitry Tursanov in tomorrow’s final after the Russian upset Xavier Malisse 6-3 7-6.
In the women’s final, former Wimbledon semi-finalist Jelena Dokic will play Roberta Vinci.
Dokic was on course to reach her second final of the year when Italy’s Romina Oprandi retired 6-4 2-0 behind.
Dokic will meet another Italian in the final after Vinci beat world number 23 Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-1.
