David Ferrer successfully defended his Abierto Mexicano Telcel Open title with victory over Nicolas Almagro in the final in Acapulco.

Neither player could make the most of the four breaks of serve they shared in the opening set, and in the end it was Ferrer who secured the tie-break 7-4.

Almagro, who was seeking a third-straight ATP Tour title, battled back bravely in the second set and took the match to a decider by winning another tie-break 7-2.

But the effort of dragging himself back into the contest seemed to sap Almagro, and Ferrer quickly broke twice early in the final set on his way to taking it 6-2 and securing an 11th career title.

Argentina’s Gisela Dulko defeated Arantxa Parra Santonja in the women’s final to claim her first WTA singles title for almost three years.

Dulko always looked threatening on her opponent’s serve during the opening set, and she secured four breaks of serve to take it 6-3.

The second set was a tighter affair and Dulko crucially broke Santonja’s serve as the Spaniard served for the set before winning the tie-break 7-5.
