Defending champion David Ferrer secured an easy passage though to the second round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel Open in Acapulco.

The Spaniard, a semi-finalist at last month’s Australian Open, made short work of Romanian qualifier Adrian Ungur as he claimed a straight-sets 6-1 6-3 triumph in just 62 minutes.

Sixth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov was a 7-5 6-2 winner over Paul Capdeville while Santiago Gonzalez won the battle of the local wild cards as he saw off Daniel Garza 6-2 7-6 (7/5).

Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo had to come from a set down as he beat Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 4-6 7-5 7-5 in a match lasting over two and a half hours.

Filippo Volandri saw off Frederico Gil 6-1 3-6 6-4 while Lukasz Kubot was a 7-5 6-0 victor against Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo.

The top seed also advanced in the women’s draw as Julia Goerges cruised to a 6-1 6-2 win over Ximena Hermoso.

Spain’s Arantxa Parra Santonja edged a close contest with Sybille Bammer 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/4) and there were also wins for Sorana Cirstea and Pauline Parmentier.
