Roddick and Querrey advance in Memphis
Andy Roddick claimed a straight-sets win over Janko Tipsarevic in the second round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis today.
The top-seeded American saw off his Serbian opponent 6-1 7-6 (10/8) in one-and-a-half hours.
Roddick served superbly in a one-sided opening set, losing just one point on his first serve and with his first-serve percentage standing at 80%.
He was unable to maintain that level in the second, making just 56% of first serves, but held his own in the tie-break after both players had broken once to seal victory.
Fifth seed Sam Querrey joined his compatriot in the next round thanks to a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) win over Brian Dabul of Argentina.
Defending champion Querrey converted his one break point to take the opening set before proving stronger in the tie-break to close out the match.
Former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro also progressed, the Argentinian seeing off Croatia’s Ivan Dodig 6-4 6-4.
Australia’s Leyton Hewitt rattled through the final set to see off France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-7 (9/11) 7-5 6-0.
American qualifier Michael Russell defeated France’s Florent Serra 6-4 6-4 in less than an hour, while Canada’s Milos Raonic edged out Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4 6-7 (10/12) 7-6 (7/1).
In the quarter-finals of the Cellular South Cup, sixth-seeded Canadian Rebecca Marino, the only seed left in the competition, saw off American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1 7-6 (8/6).
Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina beat British qualifier Heather Watson 6-3 6-4, Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic was a 6-4 6-3 winner over Russian Ksenia Pervak and Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova claimed a 6-3 6-2 success over American Alexa Glatch.
