Top seed Rafael Nadal was made to work hard before finally breaking the resistance of world number 93 Teymuraz Gabashvili to book his place in the second round of the US Open.

Top seed Rafael Nadal was made to work hard before finally breaking the resistance of world number 93 Teymuraz Gabashvili to book his place in the second round of the US Open.

Nadal won in straight sets on Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows, but it took until the seventh game of the third set for him to break Gabashvili’s serve.
