Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame a sluggish start to the defence of her French Open title to cruise past Sorana Cirstea today.
Sixth seed Kuznetsova dropped the opening three games of her first-round match on Philippe Chatrier Court but then reeled off nine in a row against her Romanian opponent before winning 6-3 6-1 in one hour 12 minutes.
The Russian’s up-and-down 2010 was reflected in her performance, which included both stunning forehand winners and limp unforced errors.
But that proved more than enough against the erratic Cirstea, who took advantage of Kuznetova’s nervy start to lead 3-0.
The world number six, who ended a five-year wait for her second grand slam title when she won in Paris last summer, soon found her range to run away with the first set before maintaining her dominance into the second.
World number 34 Cirstea stopped the rot to make it 3-1 but it was only a temporary reprieve as a double-fault handed Kuznetsova a second break and she never looked back.
