Wiggins cool on Tour chances
Britain’s Bradley Wiggins is refusing to get too carried away despite moving up to third in the overall standings in the Tour de France.
The 29-year-old Garmin-Slipstream rider put on a remarkable performance to finish alongside Frank Schleck and reigning champion Carlos Sastre in yesterday’s 15th stage.
He now sits one minute 46 seconds behind Alberto Contador, but is not getting ahead of himself just yet.
“There’s a long way go,” he said. “Let’s not get too excited.
“That’s one day. Tomorrow’s another day. Tomorrow I could be last in the Tour de France... who knows?”
The race resumes tomorrow, following today’s rest day, with the 16th stage which takes the riders 159 kilometres from Martigny to Bourg-Saint-Maurice via the north-west corner of Italy.
Spain’s Contador seized the leader’s yellow jersey with an emphatic victory on the 15th stage yesterday.
He produced a devastating break in the final five kilometres of the first-category climb to the finish line in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier to come home 43 seconds clear of Saxo-Bank’s Andy Schleck.
