Irish boxer Ken Egan has beaten Brazilian light heavyweight Washington Silva to guarantee another medal for Ireland at the Beijing Olympics today.

Irish team boxing captain from the Neilstown club in Dublin was imperious in the ring, whitewashing his opponent eight points to nil.

The win sets up an Ireland versus England grudge match in the semi-final as Tony Jeffries, who Egan beat in last June's EU final in Poland, beat Hungary's Imre Szello 10-2 on the other side of the draw.

Report to follow.
