Decision nears for Murray
A clearer picture of Andy Murray’s chances of competing at Wimbledon will emerge this afternoon, according to his mother Judy.
Murray is optimistic of taking his place at the All England Club after making encouraging progress in his recovery from the wrist injury he suffered in Hamburg last month.
The British number one will leave it until as late as possible before making a final decision – but mum Judy Murray believes this afternoon’s training session with coach Brad Gilbert will prove crucial.
“Andy is certainly hoping to play. He played three sets yesterday with Alex Bogdanovic and we’re waiting to see if his wrist has reacted to that,” she told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek show.
“If it hasn’t then he’ll practice with Jamie Baker around lunchtime and then have a final workout with Brad in the afternoon.
“He’ll be in a better position to make a decision after that. But if he’s not 100% he would be very unwise to play.
“The injury affects the forehand and none of the other shots. The forehand is a huge part of his game and he has to hit through it to make an impact.
“He has a long career ahead of him and at this stage it would be silly to take any risks.
“If he feels he has to, he’ll leave it until right up to tomorrow morning before making his decision. But he’ll have a better idea today.”
Former British number one Greg Rusedski insists Murray, who faces Nicolas Lapentti in the first round, must not risk aggravating his wrist by playing if there is still discomfort.
“If he’s 100% then he should go for it. But if there’s any sort of twinge he must pull out. We’re optimistic and Andy’s being very positive,” he said.
“Andy is number eight in the world and he will have many chances to win Wimbledon.
“Roger Federer is the dominant man but in three or four years Andy will have a chance to win the Championships so he should take his time.
“His rise has been phenomenal. He’s getting stronger and stronger and has a great bunch of people around him.
“The most important thing is for him to look after his health. If he doesn’t do that then I don’t think anyone will stop him.”
