Borg back on English grass

Five-times Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg is set to play on English grass this summer for the first time since his 1981 All England Club final defeat to John McEnroe.

The 50-year-old Borg has confirmed he will appear in the Liverpool International exhibition event to be staged at the city’s Calderstones Park in June.

Borg won five consecutive Wimbledon titles from 1976 to 1980 and also pulled off the daunting double of winning the French Open title in the same year three times.

Borg retired from competitive tennis in 1983 at the age of just 26 and briefly attempted a comeback in the early 1990s, when he failed to win a single match.

In recent years he has renewed his old rivalries with McEnroe and Jimmy Connors on the sport’s seniors tour, and was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards in December.
