Andy Murray’s impressive run in the US Open was brought to a shuddering halt by Russian Nikolay Davydenko when their last-16 clash resumed in New York today.

British number one Murray, seeded 17th in the men’s singles at Flushing Meadows, had just gone two sets to one down against the seventh seed before persistent rain spared him further punishment yesterday.

Upon the resumption at Louis Armstrong Stadium he was immediately broken by Davydenko and went 4-0 down in the fourth set before being broken a third time in the set.

And the ruthless Russian served out the game – despite an unsuccessful Hawkeye challenge – to complete a fourth-set whitewash and set up a quarter-final clash with Tommy Haas or Marat Safin.
