World number one Roger Federer claimed his seventh grand slam title with a four-set victory in the Australian Open final against unseeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

The Swiss suffered a shock when Baghdatis, who had stunned everyone in reaching the final, claimed the first set 7-5.

The Cypriot took a 2-0 lead in the second set after breaking Federer’s serve but his opponent recovered to level the match at 1-1 by taking the set 7-5.

That appeared to break Baghdatis’ resolve and Federer comfortably waltzed through the third set 6-0, quickly went 3-0 up with an early break in the fourth and eventually closed out the set 6-2 to win.
