Lance Armstrong survived a series of attacks to retain the yellow jersey on stage 14 of the Tour de France, which was won by Austrian rider Georg Totschnig.

In baking sunshine, the riders entered the foothills of the Pyrenees where 34-year-old Totschnig of Team Gerolsteiner joined a breakaway after seven kilometres before crossing the finish line in Ax-3 Domaines 56 seconds ahead of Armstrong.

The six-time champion Armstrong withstood dramatic attacks from Italian CSC rider Ivan Basso and T-Mobile’s Jan Ullrich of Germany to clinch second place on the day narrowly ahead of Basso and extended his overall lead.
