The American world number one lost the first set 6-1 to the Belgian but rallied to take the next two 7-5 6-3.

She was joined in the last eight by 15-year-old Bulgarian prodigy Sesil Karatantcheva.

The product of the Nick Bollettieri academy in Florida, who has already seen off Venus Williams in Paris, beat Switzerland’s Emmanuelle Gagliardi 7-5 6-3.

In the quarters, she will play the victor of an all-Russian match-up between Elena Likhovtseva and last year’s beaten finalist Elena Dementieva.
