Meanwhile, Ireland’s lightweight coxless fours team of Richard Archibald, Eugene Coakley, Niall O’Toole and Paul Griffin clinched their place in Sunday’s final earlier this morning.

The quartet finished third in a time of five minutes 58.89 seconds to progress.

But Sam Lynch and Gearóid Towey had to settle for a place in the men’s lightweight double sculls B final.

The duo finished fourth in heat two, recording a time of 6mins 19.09secs, which means they cannot win a medal.
