Three Irish Athletes are in action today as the 2004 Athens Olympic Games gets underway after the opening ceremony took place in the Greek capital last night.

Three Irish Athletes are in action today as the 2004 Athens Olympic Games gets underway after the opening ceremony took place in the Greek capital last night.

Some 10,500 athletes and 9,000 performers took part in the extravaganza of light, sound, music and flames which was viewed by over four billion people worldwide.

Irish Clay Pigeon Shooter Derek Burrnett and cyclists Mark Scanlon and Ciaran Power are in action early this morning.

Scanlon and Power could claim Ireland's first medals in the 239 kilometre Men's Cycling Road Race.
