Rusedski knocked out after marathon battle

Greg Rusedski has gone out after a marathon five-set battle with eighth seed Rainer Schuettler.

The 30-year-old Rusedski, who needed a wild card to make his latest bid for elusive Wimbledon glory, had his chances against the German world number eight before fading badly.

He led by two sets to one but needed courtside treatment for a shoulder injury midway through the fourth set and won just two of the last 11 games to go down 7-6 6-7 7-6 2-6 2-6.

Rusedski, whose world ranking has plummeted to 165 after a traumatic year in which he was forced to defend himself against a drugs allegation, must now be wondering if he will ever reach the Wimbledon final.

Yet it all began so promisingly as he traded blows with the former Australian Open finalist.

Rusedski rediscovered all his battling qualities to save three set points and go on to win a tie-break and saved a further three set points in a marathon second-set tie break which Schuettler won 12-10.
