Vince Spadea battled back from a set down to defeat top seed and fellow American Andy Roddick 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 to reach the final of the Franklin Templeton Classic in Arizona.

The fourth seed posted his first big upset since knocking Andre Agassi out of the 1999 Australian Open.

Roddick said: “I’m very angry at myself right now. I’m frustrated a little bit because I was looking good and thought I may have made the upswing to where I was playing really well in the second set.

“Then it was weird because I starting serving badly. Felt I let it get away a little bit.”

Spadea now faces Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer in the final after the seventh seed came from a set down to beat Romania’s Victor Hanescu 4-6 7-5 6-4.

Kiefer is seeking his seventh career ATP title and but has not won since Hong Kong in 2000, although injuries have hampered him in recent years.
