Davenport triumphs again in Tokyo
Lindsay Davenport retained the Toray Pan Pacific Open title with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Magdalena Maleeva.
The American, who has now won the tournament four times, claimed a 6-4 6-1 victory in 58 minutes.
"I've always played well here," she said. "It's an honour to win a tournament four times, especially one as prestigious as this."
After claiming the crucial break in the seventh game of the first set, Davenport never looked back.
She broke the Bulgarian's serve three times, including the final game when her forehand down the line sealed the victory.
"I just tried to play as aggressive as possible," Davenport added. "The surface here is fast and that really helps my serves and groundstrokes."
Maleeva claimed her American opponent's serve was the decisive factor.
"I tried everything but she was just too good," she said.
"The main difference was the serve. She served really well and I really needed to have a higher percentage of first serves in."
