Mauresmo cruises through in Oz
Fourth seed Amelie Mauresmo cruised into the third round of the Australian Open with a straight sets victory over Slovakian Ludmila Cervanova at Melbourne Park.
Mauresmo, finalist here in 1999 when she lost to Martin Hingis, took just 44 minutes to beat the world number 64 and has lost only three games in her two matches so far this week.
“It was a very good match, I felt comfortable out there,” she said.
“I thought I put a lot of pressure from the beginning on her. She probably didn’t really know what to do.
“I am happy about this one. I just want to keep going like this.”
Mauresmo was not concerned at her lack of competitive practice after neither Cervanova nor first round opponent Chia-Jung Chuang managed to test her.
“I am happy to have easy matches. I played some tough matches last week in Sydney. I just want to keep up the level I did today. That’s the most important.”
Mauresmo will play Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues who beat Ukrainian qualifier Yuliana Fedak 6-2 2-6 6-3.
There were also victories for seeds Elena Daniilidou (19), Svetlana Kuznetsova (30) and Fabiola Zuluaga (31), but two more fell, with Russian Elena Bovina (21) and Bulgaria’s Magdalena Maleeva (24) both bowing out.
