British number one Tim Henman has expressed his surprise at the news of Greg Rusedski’s failed drugs test.

Rusedski revealed that he had tested positive for nandrolone on Thursday but is confident of proving his innocence to the ATP, the game’s governing body, at a hearing in Montreal on February 9.

The 30-year-old claims he has been ‘singled out’ by the ATP and that his sample is one of 47 from the top 120 players on tour to show elevated levels of the performance-enhancing steroid.

The whole affair has taken Davis Cup team-mate Henman aback and he is surprised by the timing of the announcement.

Henman said: “It was a huge surprise. I have seen him in London recently. I feel as shocked as everyone else but it’s best to wait until February when everyone knows what’s happened.

“It’s strange that it’s come out now when there hasn’t been an appeal.”
