As well as the Stockholm event, the American has also decided against playing in the Masters Series tournaments in Madrid, which starts on October 13, and Paris a week later.

Speaking on the official Stockholm Open website, www.stockholmopen.se, Agassi said: “I’m sorry that I will not be participating in the Stockholm tournament but hopefully I will return in the future.”

The tournaments director Per Hjertquist added: “Obviously we are very disappointed. However, neither we nor anybody else are in a position to criticise Agassi for taking time off to be with his family.”
