Mario Cipollini broke the all-time record number of stage victories in the Giro d‘Italia.
The 36-year-old Italian took his 42nd stage win.
He eclipsed pre-war favourite Alfredo Binda‘s tally of 41 as he edged Australia‘s Robbie McEwen and another Italian Alessandro Petacchi in a sprint finish in the ninth stage, a 160km run from Arezzo.
