The Austrian dominated throughout the game, producing 11 aces on his way to a 6-4 6-3 win.

Melzer now faces fifth seed Jiri Novak in the quarter-finals of the Vienna tournament.

Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero also went out, losing 6-4 6-2 to Bohdan Ulihrach.

However, sixth seed Roger Federer did make it through, defeating Tommy Robredo 6-2 6-7 (7-5)

6-4.

Federer raced into a one-set lead, then lost concentration in the second, going down in the tiebreak.

But he won the decisive break in game nine of the final set before wrapping up the match.

Also in the second round, Nicolas Kiefer lost to James Blake in straight sets 6-4 7-6 (7-4).
