Sampras takes beating again
Pete Sampras' miserable run stretched to 32 tournaments without a win as he crashed out of the Cincinnati Masters at the hands of Wayne Arthurs.
Sampras, who hasn't felt a trophy in his hands since Wimbledon 2000, succumbed 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) to the Australian in the second round.
"Maybe he wasn't at his peak, but it's always great to get a win over one of the best players ever," Arthurs said. "Yes, he's maybe a little bit more vulnerable than he used to be."
Sampras admitted he struggled with Arthurs' serve: "He's got a huge serve, one of the best serves on the tour, and he backs it up with a big second serve. He's dangerous."
Top seed Lleyton Hewitt, the US Open and Wimbledon champion, sailed into the third round when Davide Sanguinetti withdrew because of a right toe injury. Hewitt led 5-0 when Sanguinetti withdrew.
"I still don't know where my game is," Hewitt said. "Obviously, it would have been a lot nicer to have won properly, but I'm through to the round of 16 and can't complain. Matches are going to get tougher and tougher from now on."
Andre Agassi and Michael Chang showed flashes of vintage form in scoring impressive victories.
Agassi, seeded sixth, needed just 55 minutes to beat Guillermo Coria, a 20-year-old from Argentina, 6-0 6-2.
"I was really bringing the pace at him," Agassi said. "I was hitting the ball well and controlling the points."
Chang beat Fernando Vicente of Spain 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-0.
Andy Roddick beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-4 6-3, and Carlos Moya edged Sjeng Schalken 6-2 6-4.
