Venus happy with work-out

Second seed Venus Williams breezed through her second round match at the French Open this afternoon then declared herself satisfied with the work-out.

The American took just 39 minutes to dispose of Indonesia’s Wynne Prakusya 6-0 6-1 after taking a little over an hour to beat Germany’s Bianka Lamade in the previous round.

‘‘I did a lot better today than in the first round, especially on my first serve,’’ said Williams.

‘‘I tried to take my time on my points, slow down my mind, and make it simple for myself basically and it worked out very well.’’

Venus followed the winning path of her sister Serena who this morning progressed to the second round after defeating Martina Sucha of Slovakia.

Serena caused a stir by wearing a colourful Cameroon football team style outfit comprising of a green top and skirt and huge yellow football socks.

‘‘I have seen bits and pieces of it,’’ laughed Venus, who is studying a course in fashion design alongside her tennis career.

‘‘I loved it, especially the socks.’’

Three-time French Open champion Monica Seles booked her place in the third round after a convincing 6-4 6-1 victory over Barbara Rittner of Germany.

The 28-year-old American was made to work hard in the first set after allowing a 4-0 to slip as the German battled back to level matters.

But Seles remained calm to take the set in 49 minutes.

The former Yugoslavian got a lucky break when leading 3-1 in the second set after a close line call went her way to extend her advantage.

And she followed that up by breaking Rittner’s serve with a superbly hit passing shot for a 5-1 lead, allowing her to serve out for the match.

Amelie Mauresmo was pleased with her performance after dumping out Australia’s Nicole Pratt.

The 10th seed played a near-perfect match to win 6-2 6-1 in just 50 minutes to book her place in the third round.

‘‘I am very satisfied with the way I played today,’’ she said.

‘‘I knew that by imposing my game and my powerful shots she would not resist.

‘‘She sometimes was a little bit worrying if the exchange was lasting a while but I really felt I was in control of the match and focused on winning.

‘‘I played a complete match. I clearly improved my game compared to Monday and that was the objective.’’

Mauresmo, who beat French compatriot Camille Pin 6-4 6-1 two days ago, will face either Virginia Ruano Pascual or Eva Bes, both Spanish and clay court specialists, in the next round.

‘‘I take game after game and that one will be a good test,’’ she added.

‘‘But I don’t want to look too far ahead. I’d rather concentrate on the short term, it’s worked pretty well so far.’’
