Tennis: Capriati crashes out in Sydney
Alexandra Stevenson produced a stunning upset against top seed Jennifer Capriati, ousting the Australian and French Open champion in three sets at the adidas International in Sydney.
Stevenson, 20, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon as a qualifier in 1999, sealed a quarter-final berth with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4 win on her third match point.
She had match point on her serve at 5-3 but served a double fault to give Capriati the advantage and then put a forehand wide to squander the opportunity.
Capriati raced to 40-0 in the next game and was a point off leveling at 5-5 in the deciding set when her horror run started with a series of errors to take the game to deuce
She twice served double faults to give Stevenson match points and then lost the match when she put a backhand wide.
Capriati, who had a first-round bye, received treatment when 0-1 in the third set, leaving the court for 10 minutes for what appeared to be either hip or upper leg injuries or cramp.
Kim Clijsters, the No. 3 seed and world No. 5, was down a set and a break before she rallied to beat Silvia Farina Elia 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1 and set up a quarterfinal against Justine Henin, who erased Conchita Martinez 6-0, 6-3.
After trading breaks in the second, Clijsters made the decisive break to lead 5-4 and then served out to level.
She raced through the third set in 28 minutes but finished with 60 unforced errors, which she blamed on a swirling wind and hot conditions.
Sandrine Testud, the number seven seed, defeated Henriera Nagyova 6-1, 6-2 in 59 minutes to move into a quarterfinal against defending champion Martina Hingis, while Meghann Shaughnassy had a 6-4, 6-1 win over Daniela Hantuchova.
In the first of the women's quarterfinals, Serena Williams, seeded four, faces Amelie Mauresmo, seeded six, on center court at Sydney's International Tennis Center.
Paradorn Srichaphan, who ousted men's top seed Sebastien Grosjean in the first round, lost to Max Mirnyi of Belarus.
Mirnyi won 6-2, 6-3 in just over an hour to advance to a quarterfinal against Julien Boutter, who beat German Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Nicolas Escude eliminated fourth seed Guilermo Canas of Argentina 6-4, 6-1, Lee Hynung-taik swept Karol Kucera 6-2, 6-1 and former world number one Marcelo Rios accounted for Andrei Pavel 6-1, 6-4.
