Wimbledon: Davenport chasing repeat win
Lindsay Davenport looked like repeating her semi-final victory of last year over Jelena Dokic as she took the first set 7-5 in their fourth round match on Centre Court.
The tall American’s power and placement had Dokic under pressure from the start and the Yugoslav looked tight and hurried against her 6ft 2in rival’s consistently deep shots in a series of long baseline rallies.
But it was Dokic, 18, who found the inspiration to capture the first break of serve, finishing the sixth game with a sweeping, low double-handed drive to lead 4-2.
Davenport, however, broke straight back, helped by a careless double-fault and then levelled matters again when Dokic virtually gave up on the next game after losing a 30-0 lead.
By complete contrast, number 14 seed Dokic impressively won her next service game to love but it did not faze Davenport who held almost as comfortably to make it 5-5.
Then the third seed, with marvellous consistency of return, grabbed her second break before landing an inch-perfect ace on the way to serving out for the set which took 38 minutes.
