Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario's hopes of a fourth French Open title were ended after a shock defeat to American Amy Frazier at Roland Garros.

The Spaniard was beaten 1-6 6-3 6-4 in a thrilling see-saw battle in what was her 15th French Open.

The number 11 seed threw her racket to the ground in frustration after conceding match point and was jeered by fans as she left the court.

Sanchez-Vicario, who won the French in 1989, 1994 and 1998, was the only former champion remaining in the women's draw.

The 1997 champion Iva Majoli lost in the first round and defending champion Mary Pierce withdrew before the start of the tournament due to injury.

Sanchez-Vicario made an incredible 43 unforced errors as she capitulated after taking the first set easily.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Jennifer Capriati continued her campaign for a second consecutive Grand Slam title by eliminating Italy's Tathiana Garbin 6-2 6-1 in just over an hour.
