Pete Sampras has been knocked out in the first round of the Masters Series in Rome by Israel's Harel Levy, 7-5 2-6 6-4.

Levy, who won the first set on Monday before the match was suspended by rain, lost the second set.

But Levy kept the 13-time Grand Slam champion off-balance when the match resumed with a mix of steady baseline play and occasional serve-and-volley charges.

Sampras, whose serve was steady but not dominant, collected 35 unforced errors to Levy's 25. The match was suspended following two rain delays with Sampras up 3-1 in the second set after dropping the first.
