Tennis: Gus gives Wimbledon cold shoulder

World number one Gustavo Kuerten appears to be ready to boycott Wimbledon after he stated his intention not to travel to the All-England Championships.

"I simply don’t have any desire to play there," the 24-year-old Brazilian said as he arrived back in Brazil after a thigh injury caused him to retire from the Barcelona Open.

He added the fortnight of grass-court action in June and July "could be the ideal time for me to recuperate fully".

Kuerten threatened to boycott Wimbledon last week over what he claimed was the tournament’s unfair seeding system.

In the past a committee has seeded players but following Kuerten’s threat, tournament chairman Tim Phillips has opened negotiations with top players in a bid to find an alternative solution.
