Tennis: Hingis cruises through

Martina Hingis defeated German qualifier Bianka Lamade in straight sets in the second round of the WTA Family Circle Cup in South Carolina.

Lamade led halfway through the first set before the Swiss number one seed rallied to win 7-6 (7-4) 6-1.

Conchita Martinez of Spain also had to come from behind to move into the third round with a 1-6 6-3 6-0 victory against American Lilia Osterloh.

The win ended a four-match losing streak for Martinez, who won this tournament in 1994 and 1995. Her last victory was at the Australian Open in January.

In other matches, American Amy Frazier, the 10th seed, brushed aside by Andrea Glass of Germany, 6-2 6-2 and 11th seed Lisa Raymond of the United States had a comfortable victory over Japanese qualifier Rika Hiraki, 6-3 6-0.

Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia struggled early before defeating Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 and 16th seed, Italy's Silvia Farina Elia eventually shook off South Africa's Joannette Kruger 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.

Romanian Ruxandra Dragomir Ilie defeated Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-3 5-7 6-3 while Elena Likhovtseva of Russia had a difficult time before edging Austrian qualifier Marion Maruska 4-6 6-1 7-6 (7-5).
